With the exit of the forest products industry from ownership, timberland investing has entered a new phase with a changing set of participants. With deep domestic and global relationships and no allegiance to any given manager, R&A provides dispassionate strategic advice directly to investors on all key elements of this new environment, including timberland portfolio strategy, forest management selection, property and market analysis, forest regulation and policy, and environmental and conservation issues. At a time when a higher level of internal expertise is required, R&A offers the means by sitting squarely on the investor’s side of the table.

Jim Rinehart, its President, has been involved in the forest investment industry since its inception in 1984. His various roles have included Director of Portfolio Strategy for the Hancock Timber Resource Group, Vice President and Director of Timberland Investments for GATX Capital Corporation, and Director of Conservation Investments for Huber Resources. R&A has also played key roles in the resolution of the Pacific Lumber Company bankruptcy in California, both as strategic advisor to the timber Noteholders in 2005, and in 2007, on behalf of a highly regarded investment client, as one of two competitors for the acquisition of Palco’s redwood timberlands. Since 2001, R&A has pioneered the creation of partnerships between Conservation and financial investors.

In April 2010, Mr. Rinehart published a white paper entitled Post Recession Timberland: Is it the Same Asset? , which outlined a probable path for institutional investing in timberland in the aftermath of the Great Recession of 2009.

Mr. Rinehart currently serves on the Board of Cascade Timberlands, the owner of 300,000 acres of Oregon timberland once held by Crown Pacific. He is also a founding member of the Board of the U.S. Endowment for Forestry and Communities, a $200 million endowment resulting from the Softwood Lumber Agreement with Canada. (www.usendowment.org)
